Experience & Qualifications

I have been playing mandolin, guitar, banjo and bass for over 25 years. Since 1983 I have been performing with the group Cedar Hill. I also perform with the group Buddy Ashmore & Pony Express, a group which I founded in 1979. For a number of years I performed with the Atlanta Mandolin Society Orchestra playing mandola and mandocello.

I began playing music as a french horn player while in junior high and high school and dived headlong into bluegrass and acoustic music around 1976. I have given lessons for many years, beginning as a banjo teacher in about 1982.

I teach banjo using primarily tablature as a learning aid. For mandolin and guitar I use a combination of tablature and standard music notation. Students will not only learn how to play their instrument, but will also be trained in the basics of music theory, instrument setup and maintenance, musical composition, and performing.
